What Is PHP?
PHP — Partial Hospitalization Program — is a structured, intensive treatment program for adults who need daily clinical support but don't require 24-hour residential care. You attend treatment 5 days a week, 5–6 hours per day, then return home each evening.
PHP is typically the right starting point for adults coming out of detox, stepping down from inpatient care, or entering treatment for the first time with moderate to severe substance use disorders. It delivers intensive, evidence-based treatment while you remain in your own community.
We believe in-person community creates the strongest recovery foundation. That said, we offer virtual groups and blended schedules for those in rural areas or with demanding work and family commitments. We'll work with you to find the right format from day one.
Program Structure
A typical PHP week at Deep Roots Recovery combines individual therapy, group sessions, skills training, and experiential activities — structured to keep you making progress every single day.
Attend at our Maxwell or San Marcos location. Full access to experiential therapy, outdoor activities, and the deepest level of peer community. Our preferred format for maximum impact.
Fully virtual groups for adults in rural Central Texas or those with schedule constraints that prevent daily commutes. Same clinical quality — therapy, group sessions, skills work — via secure video platform.
Some in-person days, some virtual — designed around your schedule and location. A popular option for adults with work, childcare, or transportation challenges who still want the benefit of in-person community.
PHP typically lasts 2–6 weeks, depending on individual clinical progress. Most clients transition to IOP as they stabilize. Your team will review your progress regularly and adjust your plan.
Peer group with your cohort to set intentions, share where you are, and build the daily connection that anchors recovery.
One-on-one time with your assigned clinician — working through trauma, patterns, and personalized treatment goals.
Evidence-based skills training — DBT, CBT, coping strategies, relapse prevention. You learn the tools that make sobriety sustainable.
Shared meals and peer connection. Often where the most meaningful conversations happen.
Therapeutic activities in the Texas Hill Country — movement, mindfulness, creative expression, nature-based healing.
Deeper emotional processing work — EMDR support, trauma processing, peer sharing in a structured therapeutic environment.
Daily intentions review, progress check-in, and transition back to your evening with tools to stay stable overnight.
Is PHP Right for Me?
PHP is designed for adults who need intensive daily support but are stable enough to live outside a residential facility. Signs PHP may be right for you:
You've completed medical detox or a residential program and need continued intensive structure to build on that foundation.
Your use has significantly impacted your work, relationships, or health and you need more than once-a-week therapy to stabilize.
You're managing depression, anxiety, PTSD, or another condition alongside substance use and need daily clinical oversight.
You have a stable, sober-supportive living environment — or access to Revive Recovery Homes — and don't require 24-hour medical supervision.
You've tried outpatient before and found it wasn't intensive enough. PHP provides the daily structure and accountability that makes the difference.
You're ready to go all-in — 5 days a week, full engagement. PHP works when you show up and do the work alongside a team that believes in you.

Common Questions
No. PHP is outpatient — you attend treatment 5 days/week during the day and return home each evening. You can live at home, with family, or at a sober living like Revive Recovery Homes. You are not admitted overnight.
Yes — PHP is a covered level of care under most major insurance plans when clinically appropriate. We provide free insurance verification before you commit to anything. Call (512) 557-7832 or visit our insurance page.
PHP is more intensive — 5 days/week, 5–6 hours/day. IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) is the next step down — typically 3 days/week, 3 hours/day. Most clients begin in PHP and transition to IOP as they stabilize and build their recovery foundation.
It's challenging to maintain full-time work during PHP given the 5-day, 5–6 hour commitment. Some clients take FMLA leave, reduce hours, or work in the evenings. We can discuss scheduling options to find what's realistic for your situation.
